On March 12, 2012 the final phase of the new Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre will be complete, fulfilling our dream of building a spectacular, full-service hospital offering high quality and innovative care for the patients we serve.

As one of Hamilton Health Sciences' largest hospital building projects, this modern medical facility includes approximately 425,000 square feet of new construction and 35,000 square feet of renovated space. A total of 50,000 cubic meters of rock was excavated from the site in order to build the new portion of the hospital, which stands approximately 85 feet high and 442 feet long.

Construction on the first phase of the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (formerly the Henderson General Hospital) began in February 2008. "Phase 1A" consisted of a 425,000 sq. ft. addition, which included a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department; an impressive surgical suite including eight new operating rooms; a consolidated diagnostic imaging department; enhanced oncology inpatient unit; a new hematology inpatient unit; and a custom-designed intensive care unit. Patients and staff moved into their new facilities on August 1, 2010.

Overall, the JHCC expansion has resulted in enhanced general hospital services, including a full range of acute inpatient and ambulatory services supporting cancer care and patients from the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC). Additional oncology beds and increased capacity in emergency services, surgery, diagnostic services, outpatient clinics and support areas have been created.

Over the last several months, a temporary hoarding wall has separated "Phase 1B" from the rest of the hospital. On March 12, 2012, the wall will come down, revealing a spacious new front lobby offering a panoramic view of the Hamilton Escarpment and Lake Ontario, and including an easy-access patient registration area and information desk. The new section will also be home to the new Medical Diagnostic Unit and the hospital's 9th Operating Room, as well as many non-clinical departments and support areas.

The new emergency department is one of the hospital's most dramatic upgrades. The open concept design boasts a number of features that not only modernizes the space, but also ensure it is suited to the unique and varied needs of emergency care.
