The Preop clinic, at Hamilton Health Sciences, provides services to both adults and children who will be having scheduled surgery at McMaster, Hamilton General or Juravinski hospitals. The Preop clinic provides care to over 20,000 patients a year.

Purpose

The Preop clinic helps prepare patients for their upcoming surgery and/or procedure. All patients who are having scheduled surgery must attend the Preop Clinic. Some patients may be interviewed by telephone, if your surgeon decides that type of visit is right for you.

What to Expect

Your Preop clinic appointment date and time will be provided to you by your surgeons’ office.  Appointments are usually scheduled a week before surgery.

The appointment can take several hours depending upon the tests needed and the health care providers you may need to see. Please expect your preop clinic appointment to be 2 to 4 hours. Please do not come early for your preop appointment as patients are seen in the order of their scheduled appointments. If you are telephone interviewed by the nurse, this will take approximately 20 minutes.

Please eat and take any necessary medications before coming to your appointment. You do not have to fast for this appointment. We encourage you to bring a family member or a friend with you.

In the Preop clinic, you may see several health care providers.

Health Care Providers

Nurses

Your clinic nurse will interview you, and may carry out blood work, and/or perform an ECG that has been ordered by your surgeon.

Your nurse will also provide you with information such as:

- what you need to do to prepare for surgery

- what you can expect during hospitalization

- when to stop eating and drinking before surgery

- how you need to prepare for your return home

If your appointment is by phone, the nurse will interview you, review the anesthetic questionnaire, and review any surgical instructions and medications.

Anesthesiologist

If your surgeon recommends it, you may also meet with an Anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologists are doctors that will sedate or put you to sleep in the operating room.

Pharmacy Team

Our Pharmacy team will review your medications and make sure that we are current on all of the medications you take.

Child Life Specialist

Children under the age of 16 who are having surgery may also see a Child Life Specialist. The Child Life Specialist will prepare you and your child for their upcoming surgery. They will discuss what you and your child can expect during your hospital visit including: where to go, what to bring and what to expect in the operating room
